🏡Are we taking our freedom for granted?
Over the past couple weeks, I have been reading a book aloud with the kids called One Degree of Freedom. One of the homeschool moms in the little group I am in spent a few years in Romania and knows the author of this book.
To say it has been eye opening is an understatement. As I read through the book with my kids, each day we talked about the freedoms that were at stake in Romania at that time, the freedoms that we enjoy that they did not have, etc. Things like:
the water being shut off at a certain time each night
the farmers having their food taken away from them
armed guards at every corner
someone stationed at the door of their apartment building to keep track of who left when and when they returned
typewriters being banned
certain books being banned
all telephone lines were tapped
I could go on, but it was good for me and the kids to talk about the fact that we take many of our freedoms for granted. There really is no other country in the world quite like the United States. In light of what we are facing now as a nation, I think it is important to not only understand what our freedoms are (in comparison to other countries), but to fight to keep those freedoms.
As the image above quotes from that Cuban prisoner, our freedoms here in the United States are not being taken away at gun point, but slowly and methodically over time. This past year of 2020, however, has seen a massive acceleration of our freedoms being taken away, under cover of covid.
It is happening right before our eyes and many are not paying attention. Are you? If you have become complacent or maybe don’t realize or appreciate the freedoms we have, go grab this book and read about what life was like for them. I know for my family, it confirmed in our minds anew, the urgency of the current state of our country. We need to be on our knees praying like never before, and ask the Lord what we should be doing to fight to protect our God-given freedoms.
